A British court will look into a complaint submitted by an Iraqi woman journalist from Azzubair, west of Basra against a British army unit.
The Iraqi woman, whose name is withheld on her request, has submitted a complaint alleging rape by British servicemen. The newspaper quotes a British lawyer named Richard McDonnell who together with an Iraqi lawyer and a Jordanian lawyer acting on behalf of the victim who had arrived in the UK a month ago.
The newspaper claims to have seen a copy of their submission to a British court which includes a medical report by a British hospital and the names of the alleged culprits and their military ranks. The investigations into this case will start after the communications with the defence ministry are concluded.
The article claims that an organisation for the Defence of Women prisoners under occupation has distributed a statement, claiming that during the last four years 10 000 Iraqi women have been imprisoned, majority of them were subjected to torture and sexual assaults by the occupiers and Iraqi security forces. These crimes of ill treatment, torture and rape continue today with impunity. The publicity surrounding the cases of Abeer Qassim Hamza (14 year old) of Mahmoudiya and the multiple rape of Sabreen Janabi (real name Zainab al Shumari), does not reflect the enormity of these widespread violations. These cases are only the tip of the iceberg.
صحفية عراقية تقاضي جنودا بريطانيين بتهمة الاغتصاب المدينة - لندن تلقت محكمة بريطانية شكوى اغتصاب تقدمت بها صحفية عراقية شابة ضد مفرزة من الجيش البريطاني تعمل في مدينة الزبير غرب البصرة، فيما يتوقع ان يتحول ملف القضية الى فضيحة يدفع بها مناهضو الحرب في المملكة المتحدة الى الواجهة من اجل التعجيل بسحب القوات البريطانية من العراق في فترة لا تتعدى نهاية العام الجاري. وابلغ المحامي البريطاني ريتشارد ماكدونيل منظمة عراقية انسانية تعنى بشؤون السجينات العراقيات لدى سلطات الاحتلال انه ومحايين عراقي واردني قدموا شكوى الصحفية العراقية التي وصلت الى لندن قبل شهر الى احدى المحاكم البريطانية وان اجراءات التحقيق لم تبدأ بعد بانتظار التخاطب مع وزارة الدفاع البريطانية، وقال في مذكرة مكتوبة اطلعت عليها (المدينة) «لقد قدمنا شهادات طبية صادرة من مستشفى بريطاني بالاضافة الى وقائع اعتقال ووثائق بأسماء الجناة ومواقعهم العسكرية»واضاف «لا يسعنا ان نكشف اسم الضحية في الوقت الحاضر وذلك بطلب منها، وسنعمل على حماية القضية من الدواعي السياسية حتى لا يجد القضاء ذريعة لارجاء النظر بالقضية الى فترة بعيدة
».من جهتها وزعت «رابطة الدفاع عن السجينات العراقيات تحت الاحتلال» بيانا في لندن امس ذكرت فيه انه خلال السنوات الأربعة الماضية، أُدخلت أكثر من عشرة آلاف امرأة عراقية في السجون والمعتقلات الامريكية والحكومية وتعرضت غالبيتهن للاغتصاب من قبل قوات الشرطة المحلية والقوات المحتلة» وقال «ان الكشف مؤخراً عن جريمة اغتصاب كل من عبير الجنابي وصابرين الشمّري لا يشكل أكثر من حالات ضئيلة لجرائم مرتكبة ضد النساء في السجون والمعتقلات العراقية. ورغم الكشف عن هذه الجرائم للرأي العام، بقيت أعداد كثيرة من النساء السجينات يواجهن هذه الجرائم ويُعاملن كلحوم طرية من قبل عناصر الشرطة والأجهزة الأمنية.» واشار بيان الرابطة الى انه لم يحدث منذ حروب القرون الوسطى حصول هذا العدد الضخم من الجرائم بحق النساء وقال « إن ظاهرة اكتظاظ العراق بأعداد ضخمة من السجون والمعتقلات، بلغت أعلى مستوياتها.

We women of Tadhamun condemn the persisting practice of arbitrary arrests by the Iraqi security forces. We condemn their arrests of women in lieu of their men folk. These are 'inherited' practices. We are alarmed by credible media reports of the Green Zone government’s intentions of executing hundreds of Iraqi men and women.

From the angle of the photo, it is possible to calculate that the complex is being built at E 396388 N 3785995 (UTM Zone 38 North) or Lat. 34.209760° Long. 43.875325°, to the west of the Malwiya (Spiral Minaret), and behind the Spiral Cafe. While the point itself may not have more than Abbasid houses under the ground, it is adjacent to the palace of Sur Isa, the remains of which can be seen in the photo. While the initial construction might or might not touch the palace, accompanying activities will certainly spread over it.Sur Isa can be identified with the palace of al-Burj, built by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mutawakkil, probably in 852-3 (Northedge, Historical Topography of Samarra, pp 125-127, 240). The palace is said to have cost 33 million dirhams, and was luxurious. Details are given by al-Shabushti, Kitab al-Diyarat. Samarra was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO at the end of June.
